Soaring fatality rate among motorcyclists forces RCMP to try different approaches

After a dramatic rise in motorcycle deaths on Vancouver Island in 2007, police used unconventional surveillance methods to target hundreds of riders through a pilot project that was so successful other RCMP detachments in B.C. have taken notice.

In 2007 motorcyclist fatalities skyrocketed 300% to a dozen deaths on Vancouver Island.

Using (undisclosed) unconventional surveillance methods and "wave-overs," police targeted problematic areas throughout the Island and stopped hundreds of motorcyclists after Project Traffic Tragedies launched in May.
