Motorcycle racers back on track

Riders who paced the pack across the finish line weren't the only stars who shined in the eyes of an enthusiastic opening-night crowd Saturday night at the Niagara Motorcycle Raceway.

A well-deserved round of applause also went to volunteers from the Welland County Motorcycle Club who spent much of the day preparing the quarter-mile dirt track for racing following heavy rains that threatened to delay the start of the raceway's 40th season for at least one week.

Their behind-the-scenes efforts were rewarded following the first flag of the eight-week season by a full-throttle program featuring races in 12 divisions, including for the first time on a regular basis open classes for the larger motorcycles.
