There is a private member's bill in Ontario to ban children under the age of 14 from riding on the back of a motorcycle. I'm sure most are unaware of this bill, which has passed first reading in the legislature and is heading for second reading Dec. 4. This could become law as early as spring.
Protecting our children from danger is not just a good idea, but a parent's responsibility. The Ontario government has already gone to great lengths to protect children, including helmet laws, speed limits, drinking and driving laws, graduated licensing and even ensuring they are big enough to reach footpegs to give the passenger balance and stability.
According to the Canada Safety Council, children are four times more likely to be hurt as a passenger on a bicycle and 262 times more likely to be hurt as a passenger in a vehicle than on a motorcycle. But we wouldn't think about banning children in cars or on bicycles ... would we?
