A FRIENDS MESSAGE

A FRIENDS MESSAGE

For all the Dispatch Riders I have foreknown

I pour a little from the bottle before I drink

When I roll the throttle and feel the roar of the old bikes

B.S.A's., Norton's, Triumph's and Harley 45’ makes me think.

For when I ride it seems as flight

In my saddle I sleep,

No blanket in sight

My troubles seem so light

When I'm on my bike.

We'll give it our all without a peep

Under fire, with a mouth full of dust

Bullet’s sound like bee's buzzing, I’m their gun sight

No time for deep thought, freedom is a must

With a twist of my throttle, I'm into the night

Doing deeds that no sane man would ponder

Up hills and through bombed out city's, its such a waste

I obey for King and country but some orders make me wonder

The smell of war sticks in you nose, one never forgets that taste.

Leaving men on the field of honor,

The message I carry, may shorten the strife

So fathers, mothers and the ones they'II marry,

No one wants to here their death rattle,

"I'll be home soon my dear", that's the message they will hear.

Through the mud, rain, wind, snow and the war I ride, we will win the battle.

We enter foreign towns as liberators we roll

The crowds that gather have a distance in their eyes,

War is hell, no one can deny the toll

I twist my throttle and give it some gas,

This war can kiss my ass.

I'll sign to fight the Japs and take the 30 days at home

For all the friends I left, my true friend Reg, I said goodbye

We were buddies through Holland, Belgium, France and Rome

I board the ship, leaving my bike, log book and the European war behind.

Mum and Sis greet the train; I left a boy and came back a man

The horn that sounds in town at noon was late one summer’s day in '45

Down the main street I ride as I stand on the seat of my old Indian to say,

THE WAR IS OVER, they still remember

It took awhile to pass... but I'm home for good. Thank god we survived.

They called me Dusty, that was my handle

Our lives will be so different; I had a tear in my eye

I'll marry my true love Lilly; it took some convincing to be a couple

We raised two bundles till death do us part by and by.

I've had a good life so far, with lots more around

I get out on my scooter, and roll that throttle once more

I'd do it again if circumstances abound.

I still remember those days when my country called

So today, as time passes, be free and roll that throttle

Take heed the lessons from the old guard

For all the masses, pour out the first drink of the bottle

To my comrades and all the fallen!

CHEERS
