When Roger DeCoster left Suzuki to join KTM for the 2011 season, it was no secret that he wanted his protégé, 2010 AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey, to come with him. The main obstacle was KTM’s lack of a competitive 450. Focused on the FIM World Championship, the Austrian manufacturer had developed a downsized 350 that claimed two successive MX1 titles, but only won a single moto in America.
