Community shocked as partner in law firm killed while jogging

23 Jun 2010
SAINT JOHN - A partner at a Saint John law firm known for her dry wit, athleticism and love of family died Sunday after being struck by a motorcycle near the Reversing Falls Bridge.

Caroline Higgins, 46, had just returned from a St. Andrews camping trip with her boyfriend when she went for a jog alone, said Peter MacPhail, a friend and another partner at Gorman Nason.

At about 6:45 p.m., a 53-year-old man driving a motorcycle failed to negotiate a turn on Bridge Road, police said.

The eastbound motorcycle crossed two lanes of traffic and struck her on the sidewalk before going over a guardrail on the north side of the road, said Sgt. Pat Bonner of the Saint John Police Force.

Higgins, knocked unconscious with head injuries, was taken to hospital, where she later died.

"It was just an unfortunate accident - a tragedy," said Bonner, who said speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. No charges have been laid. The motorcycle driver had minor scrapes. To read the rest of the article: http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/city/article/1104234
