Rossi Racing for Rain

Following Valentino Rossi’s 2nd place at the wet French MotoGP at Le Mans last weekend a French cartoonist Thieum has penned this cartoon which shows the Ducati factory hiring a witch doctor to pray for rain at all the remaining rounds.

As Vale put it in the post race press conference if you are hoping for rain you are usually in the shit.  Even last year the Ducatis were fast in the wet with both Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden transformed in wet morning warmups towards the top of the timing sheets only to collapse back down to embarrassingly low levels in the inevitably dry races.

Supposedly the new 1000cc specification Ducati Desmosedici GP12 was not so hot in the rain either according to the riders with the aggressive power delivery mostly to blame.  Somehow a bike that doesn’t have a good front end feel and a too aggressive a power delivery in the dry is transformed when its wet. Quite how this is done, Ducati would like to know because a lack of feel and a whole heap of torque you don’t want is usually a recipe for the kitty litter in a wet race.

Ducati have testing this week at Mugello where a new engine will be tested that is designed to soften that delivery.  Buoyed by the best race result for Ducati bar Stoner (obviously!) since Toni Elias was second at Brno back in 2008 the team will be hoping that the revised engine is tenths in the right direction. Let’s hope its dry.
