B.C. RCMP officers go online with corruption claims

20 Aug 2012

Byron Chu (QMI Agency) – A group of RCMP members, past and present, has launched a website blog to expose more stories of internal corruption and misconduct, and to express their cynicism over Commissioner Bob Paulson’s efforts to clean the force up.

However, the Re-Sergeance Alliance blog, claiming to represent more than 500 members in the RCMP’s E Division in B.C., was taken down Thursday.

“My understanding is the blog will go up and come down,” said psychologist Mike Webster, who has been in contact with alliance members. He has provided counselling services for RCMP officers, but the force recently blacklisted him for his ongoing criticisms of the organization.

“It will come back and be up in a different place. They’re concerned with their own security, with their own safety … they’re afraid of their employer,” Webster said.

In an open letter originally posted to the blog, the Alliance acknowledged “absolute corruption at the most disturbing levels,” while questioning the new commissioner’s abilities to repair the force as his managers “pay lip service to him, yet behind his back continue to resist any change in thought or actions.”

The alliance is not an organized group with a list of members, Webster said, but rather a loose group of individuals and “cells” who will contribute stories of corruption within the force without knowing the identities of the contributors.

“It’s organized like a terrorist network,” he said, adding alliance members fear that Paulson’s plan to change the culture and behaviour within the RCMP will also target the employees who raised concerns in the first place.

“Not every RCMP member, who has a complaint or a grievance against the company, is a Donald Ray or a Monty Robinson,” said Webster, referring to the high profile disgraced officers.

“Their concern is if they’re not consulted, if there aren’t some real transformational changes in the RCMP and its top-down approach … things are going to go from bad to worse in the organization.”
