Accident: Two local men hospitalized after logging truck trailer flips in Vermont

Posted By GRANT LAFLECHE - ST Catherines Standard - STAFF

Wayne Popiluk can't think of a single reason why he should still be alive.

All things being equal, he should have been crushed under a couple of tons of logs hundreds of kilo-metres from home.

But he wasn't. And everything seems a little different now.

"I woke up Saturday and it was cold and overcast and threatening rain and I though to myself, 'This is the most beautiful day I have seen,' " said the 60-year-old retired St. Catharines firefighter. "It's a miracle I'm here at all."

Popiluk and his friends Peter Moffett, Mark Bertie and Bob McIntosh had a brush with death Wednesday while on a motorcycle tour of Vermont to watch the seasons change and take in the sights.

Popiluk said the four St. Catharines men had stopped at a quaint roadside restaurant at the intersection of Route 100 and Route 125 in Vermont.

"It looked like a great little place, so we stopped, parked our bikes and took our helmets and jackets off," he said. "Then we saw the truck."
