When Robert Paris heard about the young man who was kidnapped in Montreal North on Wednesday night, his reaction was spontaneous.
"He must have debts," Paris said flatly.

For Paris, a former street worker-turned-co-ordinator of Pact de rue, the incident, which saw the SWAT team arrest five youths Thursday morning, is a reminder of the persistent presence of street gangs in Montreal, despite the best efforts of organizations like his, the police and schools to get vulnerable kids into boxing or basketball, and away from extortion and dealing.
