When Sarah Kimball, editor of Whitehorse Press in New Hampshire, wrote this promotional “blurb” for the back cover of “Motorcycle Journeys Through Atlantic Canada,” she was unwittingly giving our world-famous scenic drive quite a compliment. For many bikers in Canada and the United States the Cabot Trail is considered the best one-day motorcycle ride in eastern North America. Unfortunately, to those of us who live here and drive it a lot, it is just another afternoon ride, something that we tend to take for granted.
The afternoon of last Aug. 18, however, was something different. Renee Parker from Wellington, New Zealand, was standing next to my motorcycle, at a little lookoff on the top of Cape Smokey. We had just driven around the Cabot Trail after having lunch in Cheticamp and were on our way back to North Sydney, after stopping in Cape North and White Point.
