The man who died in a motorcycle crash Saturday has been identified by family as 40-year-old Duane Grand, a Metchosin resident.
Grand’s Ducati motorcycle collided head-on with an SUV around 1:30 p.m. at a sharp curve on Watkiss Way near Burnside Road West in View Royal.
Police could not say what caused the crash. There is no indication that alcohol was a factor, and a traffic analyst is investigating whether speed played a role, said West Shore RCMP Cpl. Scott Braes. That stretch of road does not see many accidents, he said.
Officers told Grand’s wife, Gina, that the SUV, driven by a lone man, might have crossed the centre line and entered the eastbound lane, she said in an interview.
Grand told Gina he was going out for a ride to pick something up. “And then he left. He said he’d be back in a bit,” Gina said.
Close friend Cameron Woodsend said Grand was an experienced rider, formerly an amateur racer.
“He was very cautious,” he said. “He knew what he was doing on his bike. I just can’t see it being his fault.”
The Ducati was one of many bikes owned by Grand, said Gina, but it was his “dream bike.”
