2012 Triumph 675 Street Triple R | First Ride

Triumph's Street Triple has been an amazing showroom success. It combines the looks of the big 1050cc Speed Triple with the size and handling of the Daytona 675, making it an incredibly capable and entertaining motorcycle. More than 40,000 examples of this middleweight naked bike have been sold worldwide since 2007, with sales holding steady despite the economic recession.

For 2012 the legendary streetfighter has undergone a pronounced visual update, plus many subtle, unannounced mechanical refinements. The bike has been "de-chromed," with brushed-steel exhaust headers, heel guards and silencers replacing the previous polished items. The cockpit now houses a new dash as well as the tapered handlebar used on the new Speed Triple. The smaller bike also gets its bigger brother's pentagonal headlights, much to many riders' chagrin. "Originally we planned to keep the same lights as before on both models," admits Triumph's Product Manager Simon Warburton. "Some will like them, others won't. But it's the bike underneath that counts."

We are very familiar with the Triumph Speed Triple. Over the years it has been a fixture in our Streetfighter Shootouts and has been one of the most popular naked bikes of all time. In fact, it is the original OEM Streetfighter if you want to get serious about things. Well, Triumph just got a little more serious after going for an in-depth redesign of its iconic model for 2011.

Starting with the appearance, the Speed Triple retains its aggressive, stubby stance and muscular persona. The sexy single-sided swingarm is back as are the sweet multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The bodywork has been slicked-up a bit with the addition of side cowling that skirt along the trailing edge of the radiators plus a nicely sculpted tank and minimal bodywork that looks like a supersport tail section on the backside. The up-swept dual exhaust caps off the look by allowing that swingarm to be exposed. I don’t know why any OEM that goes through the effort of building such a component would insist on concealing it anyway. Triumph did right here, no doubt. he middleweight sportbike wars just got a little more interesting when the new 2011 Triumph Daytona 675R kicked in the doors of the pub and proclaimed itself the new flagship sportbike of the legendary British brand. It features the venerable 675 Triple engine, the basic chassis dimensions and appearance as the original but with a few very important upgrades. The 675R is equipped with Ohlins suspension, 4-piston Brembo monoblock calipers, Brembo master cylinder and a quick-shifter all for just $400 more than its most expensive Japanese rival.
