The largely commuter motorcycles dominated Indian two-wheeler market landscape has altered vastly in the last couple of years. With the slew of launches in the 200 cc and above category, the premium motorcycle market is poised for growth. According to a report in Business Standard, with the relative success of the 250cc sports bike retailed by Japaneseauto maker Honda and Bajaj’s recent announcement in 200 CC category with Pulsar 200NS and KTM Duke 200, the Japanese two-wheeler major Yamaha is also gearing up for local manufacturing of its planned 250cc sports bike, as against assembly operations done by Bajaj Auto for Kawasaki.

Yamaha's press conference at the Tokyo Motor Show today was a genuine sign of the times. Four brand new world premiers were shown. The largest internal combustion engine amongst them was a 250cc model with fat tires designed to go anywhere - the SUV of motorcycles was the claim.

TOKYO -(MarketWatch)- Yamaha Motor Co. (7272.TO) will stop developing motorcycles for the domestic market with 250cc or larger engines in Japan as a cost cutting measure, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported in its Saturday morning edition.
