Own the Night - How to Drive Safely at Dark?

Written by

rsz own the nightRiding a motorcycle at night is one of those things you simple must experience in life, especially if you already own a bike. But you must also take into account the potential risks of driving at night. Unless you can find open roads with no cars or trucks on them, you are going to run an additional risk of getting into an accident when you ride at night.

But that does not mean you should give up night riding altogether. The best thing you can do is take certain precautions. Here is a look at some tips for helping motorcycle riders drive safely at night.

Bright Clothing –

rsz own the nightThe type of clothes you wear is going to make all the difference when it comes to riding at night. If you are wearing jeans and a leather jacket, you are going to be very hard to see on the road. Even if they can see your bike or light, they will not necessarily see any part of your body. It is much better to wear reflective clothing so that you are clearly visible on the road. Buy reflective shirts and jackets that are specifically designed for biking, because those will contain the type of material and the colors you need to stay safe on the road in darker conditions.

Lighting –

The default headlight on your bike is not always the best choice when it comes to riding at night. The default lights are fine for evening conditions, but when it is pitch black on the roads, you need some extra power. Talk with a mechanic or expert at Max Auto Glass to see if they can provide you with some guidance.

Dual Running Headlights –

Even though one powerful headlight can really help ensure your bike is properly visible, along with giving you the ability to see clearly in front of you, one light is not always enough. Having two thinner headlights right below your main headlight not only makes your bike’s light more visible, but it also gives you a wider and clearer field of view.

Reflective Tape –

Having reflective tape on different parts of your bike can really help if you are looking to ride at night. The reflective tape will make your bike easier to spot, especially if you are wearing similarly bright clothes too. You may think your bike will look silly with such tape on its front and sides, but would you rather look cool or remain alive?

Driving Technique –

Even if you take all the precautions in the world, you are going to get in an accident if you drive recklessly at night. Always make sure you are not speeding excessively, especially on busy roads or areas where there are a lot of intersections.

As long as you follow all of these guides, you should have no issues when it comes to riding your motorcycle at night. It may seem like a lot of steps to take, but staying safe is worth the hassle!
